In January Ciara received quite a bit of backlash after reposting one of Pastor John Greys sermons about relationships and singleness on Instagram with the caption "Level Up", I distinctly remember this because I ended up posting an image on Instagram soon after that said 'Level Up' with a caption about the definition of insanity. Whereas a lot of people thought Ciara was being condescending for posting what she did, I personally had no problem with it. Ciara is happy on the surface at least and living her life with her husband and two beautiful children. Was I expecting her to drop a song and video though? Not at all.
I'll be honest with you, as usual, my first impression of the video was "okay Ciara back with the legs and body and dance moves, I see you girl" but my first impression of the song was that it was just "ehhh". My thoughts on the song changed after I saw all the #LevelUpChallenge's that began to circulate on Instagram, so I gave the song another listen and really focused on what she was saying in her verses, at that point I fell in love with the message Y'all should know by now that I love a good message and the fact that it's really just a feel-good song because it makes you want to get up and dance. On "Level Up" Ciara speaks of how her "old mistakes are gone", her "comeback is on one hunnid", how nowadays she's about "less talking more action", how her "lessons made blessings", the fact that she stays "prayed up" and there is nothing she's afraid of. Who couldn't relate to that if you're on your grind and letting you past define your future? Does this song make me want to 'Level Up' even more now than I was the day before it dropped? Absolutely.
